You guys are truly doing an amazing job with your new role as parents. Congratulations & enjoy the photos!

I graduated from high school in 1991 – that seems like awhile ago now & immediately started University, having saved up half of every dollar I’d ever received – starting out from babysitting at 10 years old to working at DQ (who doesn’t have a fast food job in their history?) to working 3 part time jobs in high school – meanwhile still babysitting!  I was a busy girl.  I attended University for about 2 months & then in an act of rebellion, quit school, moved out of my parents house & was (temporarily) disowned by my family.  whew.  It didn’t take long for me to realize that having a 9-5 job to support myself with no where to advance to in the future wasn’t the best plan. I went back to U of C the next Fall, taking General Studies, still not quite sure of what to do with myself.  That Christmas I received a used manual film camera (Pentax K1000) & several rolls of b&w film.  I was instantly hooked.  THIS was what I was passionate about – this is what I wanted to do & quickly switched every possible class in the direction of pursuing photography.  This was back when there were no digital cameras – Photoshop was an optional class – a new program that was just being offered.  It was from this point in photographic history that I graduated from U of C with my BFA (my dad says he’d always knew I’d have initials behind my name one day).  There was one problem with this.  A degree in Fine Art in 1997 did not provide me with any information or practical knowledge of how to support myself in my chosen field in the real world.  So I began assisting other photographers.  I did it all; architecture, food, lifestyle, portraits & weddings, even Santa photos in the mall (ugg!).  I found out that capturing people is what I loved the most.  I had an amazing mentor in this area – Bud Moore – who runs a fabulous wedding & commercial photography business & to this day I am inspired by his work. I also had a phenominal job as a studio manager working with Bilodeau/Preston Photography (now John Bilodeau Photography & Lisa Preston Photography) who shoot Interior Design/Architecture & Food Photography.  I learned more in a few months of working of these successful & talented photopgraphers than I did in all my years of University. I will always be grateful to them for giving me a chance & encouraging me to pursue my photography dreams.  Meanwhile, I started my own little photography company – f8 photography.  Happily, a few years later I met a wonderful Australian man (love you honey!) who also had an interest in photography & when my assistant couldn’t make it for the wedding I was shooting one Saturday, Matt stepped in to help out.  That was 13 years ago.  From there it’s just gotten better & better.  We’ve gotten better & better, as photographers, business owners, parents & as a couple.  I love to learn & am constantly trying to improve in every aspect of the business (remember photoshop was an optional class back in 1997 & there were no digital cameras!).  These things are all conscious efforts at improving our craft & business to be able to offer better service to our clients.  Our goal is to be constantly striving to be better & better while providing people with amazing customer service.

Everyday I appreciate that I am still doing a job I love & get to meet so many fabulous people who also appreciate what we do. So – 500 posts later…..I am hoping it will only get better & better in another 500 posts.  So Thank-you.
