As a business & as a family we make eco friendly decisions and practice helping the earth – by choosing local suppliers, recycling & reusing. Our philosophies in life are the same as in business.
Our home & meeting & shooting space are in the same neighbourhood which enables us to walk/bike to most meetings & quite often to our shoot locations. Using the least square footage possible for living & sharing meeting & shooting space with others helps keep our impact on the earth down.We deliver high quality photography products and services and do so in a way that is mindful of our business operation’s impact on the earth. We are constantly learning and trying to improve our practices & hope to inspire small changes in everyone’s daily lives. We recycle, reuse and always choose local when possible.
We seek to partner with locally-owned business whenever possible, and we especially seek out those businesses that already have active, sustainable initiatives. Sharing ideas, spaces & events with local businesses benefits us all & creates a great sense of community.
The two big impacts of our business are travel (emissions, fuel consumption) and the need to purchase electronics (cameras, computers, printers). As a couple that works together we are able to often car-pool and reduce our vehicular travel as much as is possible – even walking or bike riding to work & meetings in our local community. Planning our errands into as few as trips as possible & using vendors close to home helps save on gas and time.
Being digital photographers is easier on the landfills: less packaging, no used film cans in the trash. The film development process alsoinvolves toxic chemicals, and uses a tremendous amount of water and electricity. We always use rechargeable batteries in our cameras & flashes instead of disposable ones. While we can’t buy camera gear from recycled plastics we only upgrade our equipment when it is necessary to do so. It is standard in the industry to buy the ‘latest and greatest’ photographic gear & gadgets & we try to tell a message of reduced consumption by using our older equipment as our backup gear or selling camera equipment we no longer need to be re-used & then someone else can benefit. We conserve electricity by turning off and unplugging electronics when not in use: computers, televisions, projectors, scanners, printers, battery chargers, lights. We use local suppliers for of 90% of the photographic products we offer (albums, prints, canvases etc.) which are produced in Calgary or Edmonton & always minimize and re-use or recycle packaging.
We use the least amount of paper possible by leveraging the power of the Internet and uploading client information and forms to the Web. Our paperless online newsletter reaches out to clients to keep them in the loop of current promotions & f8 news. Our clients can also book their wedding, sign the contract, and pay invoices online. Clients have the option of downloading images digitally online to avoid using consumable materials. Utilizing online Web galleries to proof photos sessions and albums helps reduce our paper trail & in-person projection proofing is also a great way to reduce the need to provide our clients with paper proofs. When we do produce printed material we chose 100% or FSC recycled paper from our local printer & run small batches producing only what we need, minimizing waste.
Our business has a very personal aspect to it in that we are very front and centre with what we do in our daily lives and how we seek to balance our work/life. We get to know our clients on a personal level & therefore want & need to live our values in our personal lives as well as in business. We build a trusting relationship with all our clients and have a contract based policy on how we conduct business. In our daily operations, we constantly strive to live a life that reduces our daily impact and to live in-line with our mission statement, making making all our business decisions with green practices in mind. Our cleaning products are better for the earth as well as for human use. Being centrally located enables us to buy all meat, seafood & produce locally at farmers markets which decreases our carbon foot print and supports sustainability. We support local businesses in our neighbourhood – enabling us to make most purchases within walking/biking distance including taking our children to school & extra curricular activities.
We have an active local presence and local offerings. We teach seminars in Calgary through The Camera Store & CPLC (Canadian Photographic Learning Centre) & at SAIT and we provide information sharing online & through community events in conjunction with local businesses. We are members of the CBA – Calgary Bridal Association – (& formerly on the advisory panel) where a high level of professionalism is expected & promoted as well as supporting other local vendors in the group.
We happily seek donations from local businesses when planning events and when purchasing gifts for our clients. We also donate our products and time to many local events (COP sports program & IVF program are examples) & enjoy our services providing added value to our community.
For f8 photography being green isn’t just about reducing, recycling & re-using. It’s a mindset and a lifestyle.
