What to wear for Christmas photos?
You can go a few different directions with this: Christmasy, dressy or casual.
Should I dress Christmasy? That would depend if you want these photos just for Christmas cards or are you planning on sharing & displaying the images all year? If the answer is all year then skip the Christmasy & just go dressy or casual. Looking for fun Christmasy photos for your cards? Then by all means – Christmas it up.
Dressy or casual? What’s more comfortable for your family? If every photo you have is in casual clothes from your iPhone this year – maybe think about stepping it up a notch & dress up a bit for the photo shoot. One thing to remember is for everyone to be approx. the same dressiness or casual-ness. If dad is in a shirt & tie & the kids are in ripped jeans & hoodies – it’s not a cohesive look.
What colours should we wear? Pick 2-3 colours & have everyone dress in variations of those. Great colour combos for example: black, grey, yellow or blue, green, white or grey, pink, blue. I suggest avoiding wearing reds as it reflects that colour back onto your skin & isn’t flattering for everyone. Totally lost? Start with choosing a colour that matches your kids eyes. Choosing clothes with textures in your colour range are a great way to avoid having everyone wearing just solid blocks of colour & adds interest.
Avoid logos & words on clothes. I really can’t stress this one enough. Yes, your son loves Deadpool but the Christmas family photos is not the place to be wearing that t-shirt. Same with words on clothes. Chances are you & the kids will be moving, sitting, standing etc. in the photos & having the words on your shirt perfectly legible is not going to happen in every shot. Then it it just becomes a jumble of letters people try to figure out when looking at the photos – instead of focusing on your happy expressions & cute kids.
Accessories? Yes, ladies bring a scarf or wear a fabulous necklace. A headband & necklace for little girls is great. Dad – wear your favourite watch, tie, belt, shoes etc. Accessories are a fun way to show your family’s personality in the photos.
Does footwear matter? Yes. Your feet may or may not be in the photos but if junior is wearing his clunky beat up snow boots & mom is rocking her strappy sling back high heels – again – not a cohesive look. Make sure to pack clean appropriate shoes for everyone.
Simple & classic styles & wearing what you feel good in is always your best bet.
